1 week down, a million years to go.

It's been a week now since i've been on the Carnival Paradise and i have to say there's a lot in a week's work. I feel like i've already been on the ship for an eternity.
Singing close to 30 hours a week is exhausting, but definitely enjoyable. I've met some really fantastic people and already, within a week, had some crazy and amazing experiences.
I started out my first week singing at the top of my lungs every night, like i do on land. I quickly realized, however, that belting my face off for thirty hours a week is absolutely impossible. SO, with a nice, seasoned, rasp-tastic voice i finished out the week bringing every song that i sing down at least a half step, and choosing set lists consisting mostly of Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and Amy Whinehouse.
Now, i know that sleep and hydration are the two key ingredients to a healthy voice, but i found when i slept the day away before my nighttime gigs, my voice wouldn't even be audible until maybe the second hour of my set.  So, lesson #1: Sleep is great, but don't wake up and go directly to a gig. A singer should always allow herself at least two hours of awake time prior to singing for a five hour set. The last day of the four day cruise that just ported, i decided to stay awake all day, and keep myself busy (as opposed to going to my cabin and hybernating) and miracle of miracles, my voice was practically back to normal. I think it was a combination of the waking hours and the previous caution that i demonstrated with lower, slower tunes.

PS, i really apologize if this blog is boring you to tears. It's not one of my most exciting...

SO, in closing, if anyone of you wants to come to long beach on a monday or a friday and have some breakfast, lunch, see a movie, go shopping, get on the Queen Mary, go to the aquarium, etc, just shoot me an email. I'd love to see you and i will indeed try to keep as current as i possibly can on my blog, assuring you all that i'm still alive and well and i haven't fallen overboard.

Love and miss you friends,
Allegrasings

  1. I can't wait to hear your voice after 6 months! I mean, if it's possible for me to love it any more than I already do.

  2. I was on that boat! Saw and heard you sing, and even with the raspiness, you sounded GREAT! I LOVE live music, and don't know how you managed to sing 5-10pm was it? back to back nights! As far as entertainment on the ship, you were definitely my favorite. Awesome to meet you and honored to have met you. I really hope you make it big (if you haven't already!). Spreading the word! ~charlotte (http://ellaloves.tumblr.com)
